A couple of questions that I have for all you experienced owners. My family already has two beer/wine license but what I always wanted to know is if they are transferable. If you own two different places can you use the same license? Also for a liqour license do you have to buy one from the city/state or can you buy it from a closing business.

Thank you everyone for all your comments - very helpful

I don't know about your neck of the woods, but here in Arkansas, a liquor license is tied to a geographic area and not a person. Ours states that the building between Markham St. and Cumberland Ave. and Between President Clinton Ave. and the Arkansas River. So basically any building on that block. I have seen others that say "in the vicinity of 1500 block of 15th St." So Here it would not be possible to have two establishments with one license, unless they were conected with a passageway between the two that is always open. But I don't know about any other states. :)

Again, it is different for every state, but I would say in many cases (as it is in Texas I believe) it is tied to both the location and the owner. This makes sense if you think about it:

It is tied to location, because there are certain areas that can't have a liqour serving or selling business within a certain distance, for example a church or elementary school.

And

It is tied to the individual/company because only law abiding citizens with a clean background can sell alchohol.

However, this does not mean that an existing liscense cannot be transferred from one legal location to another, or from one legal citizen/business to another.

In the end you're going to have to contact your local ABC to find out the rules for you state.
