Do you really need an ASCAP license if you are not doing live performances?
I know the safe answer is "YES" but does anyone have specific info on how much and the pros and cons? I don't want to "steal" but I'm not into giving away the farm either. If anyone has specific knowledge on the subject I would appreciate some insight.
Thanks

Yep! BMI also. If you have a jukebox there is a license that covers all. Don't know your specifics but they don't find everyone. Law is on their side if they want to get nasty.

BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC are all required. Type of entertainment such as bands, DJ, jukebox, satelite radio, etc doesn't matter. If you play music in any fashion whatsoever you will pay these three companies a license fee.
As far as pros and cons, you dont have a choice, you have to pay if you want to play.
As far as how much you will have to pay depends on if you take cover charge, have dancing, use bands or DJ's, play video music, How many days a week you do all of these things, etc. I think there is a straight formula for sq footage of building but you may end up paying more that way. I don't have the formula in front of me, but you may find it if you look at ASCAP's website, or maybe someone here has the exact info you need.
Here is an FAQ I found on ASCAP's site that may answer some of your questions.

I suggest you don't go looking for these companies however, let them find you. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all the good info.
It really seems odd to pay an entity a fee when there is no "VISIBLE" benefit. I guess you can't see "no lawsuits" either.
I searched their website and couldn't find a formula. If anyone has one that would be great. I really don't want to call them because they would immediately become interested in what is going on and where. No need in waving a red flag at this bull.
