I want to book some bands located in the US Virgin Islands for an event in NYC.

What is the standard for paying live acts, do you pay them after the event?
Do you ever pay them prior or give them a downpayment?

I would pay them after the event. Sign a contract that if they cancel or fail to perform on the night given they will not get paid.

Most the time you will be paying for the band in full, food, hotel, airfare, and transportation, but you can always work with them on that, depending on how big they are or not they will pay for some of that out of what your paying them for the gig.

There is no standard. There are many different ways to pay a band:

Door Percentage with minimum Guarantee

Door Percentage with no min Guarantee

Flat Rate

The only time we ever pay anything before the show is to cover travel expenses.

I agree I figured that paying for travel expenses would be sufficient, and then after they perform they get paid. Do you pay with company check, cashier's check or cash.. how is it usually done...

The reason I asked was, because one of the artist that I was booking was asking for a deposit...
