Hey Guys keep up the good work you are doing on these forumns as they look like they are a god resource for information and ideas.

To start off Hi im from Australia and i would like to open a small Bar lounge (****tail). Im 24 and on my final year of marketing at university and have had 2 years experience in a kitchen as a cook so I have experience in managing people I think, with no experience in a bar. Is it hard to learn the workings of a bar could working in one for 6 months and seeing how it is being run enough? An opportunity has presented itself on one of the cities hot night spots that has cheap rent and is underground 7x20 aprox 140 sq meters. It used to be an old attic and I would have to build the bar up from scratch no toilets. The street is an upmarket street with plenty of cafes and bars on it. I am wondering if this is too small and being a bar and only being buy 4 nights of the week if its worth a risk. Ive saved 20k and have a small unit how much would it all cost? ive got a limit of 150k. Basically what im asking is what type of money a small bar can make if it cant pay me a wage of 35k and make a 50k netprofit margin then its not worth the headaches rather find a day job with beneifits but if it has the potential to make more than that than it would be a nice job to have that I would love to try. Any information on pricing setup would be helpful. Thank you

Hey Dude,

good on ya for thinking big. I'm 24 in Australia and I'll be opening a nightclub in about a week, hopefully if our liquor license comes through, in Perth called Blu Print nightclub.

The first thing you'll want to do is give liquor licnsing a call and ask them what it will take to get a liquor license in the place if it hasn't previously held a liquor license. Because there are other bars in the area they will think you're taking their business. So they will challenge your application in the court. If they do that, which they definately will, you will be up for around $70k in legal fees and you may still not get the license.

Plus if you have no experience in running a bar find someone who is successful at managing a bar and ask them to be your partner.

hey guys,

im really hoping you can help me out a bit, i live in Sydney Australia my friend and i have been brainstorming an idea about a nightclub in our area for quite a while now, we know there is a high demand for one. we have started researching courses, and found a course through OTEN/ TAFE we start that next week, liquor licences, council regulations, etc but we would really like any other information on getting started all the hidden costs, the steps you went thro to get a liquor licence etc.

it would be a great help, as we have kinda hit this brick wall and finding information is so hard..
