Do they work and are they popular?

I think that with the right music format and location, it would work. There are a few of these types of clubs in the larger cities and in Europe.
The biggest hurdle would be your customer base. You would have to be located in a large market area in order to get a decent cross section of customers.
Let us know what you have in mind.

I think you would also have to be in a tourist area, or a place where people don't work!
Getting people to come out during the day is a great idea, but You have to really give them a reason for comming out. I think most people love to party during the day, just look at The Fourth Of July or St. Patties Day. But both of these are examples of excuses for drinking at noon. What reason will you give people to drink in the wee hours?
It really has to be a reason that they can sink their teeth into, You have to make it O.K. for them to do so.

I am looking at an alternative to Nightclubs. It must be the shift worker in me...About 20% of people in our country (don't know about Sydney - have to research further) work shifts.
As a patron, I am often left looking for a night/day club hybrid but I am only fishing at this stage. I know what I want but I don't know if there are enough people who want the same thing!
- Still thinking...
dayclubs are different manifestations of them exist, coffee houses and internet cafes stylized, are one way to do it. There is a large group out there that need to sit down somewhere and get work done and at the same time enjoy the atmosphere around them.
coffee/computers/music/lighting/tables/designs will bring in a lot of people.

I may be little off the subject here, but I currently work at an "afterhours" club. My Sat night starts at 11:59pm and ends at 7am... We serve ALL night and into the AM. I was shocked to see ho wmany people come in about 3:30 and do not leave till its light out.
I clock out around 7:30am and we still will have a good 50-100 people jammed in the VIP room which we close last... Anything can be done if its done in a way that works... =)

MiB ATL,
Interesting, thank you. I have noticed that the odd club in my area stays open sometimes past noon, if the clientelle is there.
Anyone,
I think the closing times for clubs in the U.S. are comparatively early and the laws may not allow for extended nightclub hours.
Some clubs here have a 24-hour licence.
Are there many/any clubs in the U.S. that extend way into the day?
If so, does anyone know what type of person (shift workers, perhaps) frequents them (you may be one of them and not only in the U.S.)?

Well we do not have a TIME we close, but after 7am we push everyone into the VIP area so we can clean up the rest the club, and the VIP room closes when they feel everyone is done... It can be 9-10am at times... We stagger our shifts so everone is not there all night and morning...

You may be interested in this light article I saw on Dec 31, 2002. Please excuse the media hype:
NIGHTCLUBBING is now a daytime affair. The hottest tickets this summer aren't for the indoor lighting-infused dance parties but for more relaxed, sun-fuelled affairs.
Events such as 'Vibes on a Summers day', 'Moonlight Sounds', 'Splash' and 'Sounds' on New Years Day have overtaken the harsher and more expensive all night dance parties as young Sydney's choice festivals.
And all these events are all over by 10pm. Typical of the change, about 16,000 'Field Day' tickets sold out in late November at $AUD69-79.
