I am curious about this question. My boyfriend's bar is out of state and he is an absentee owner- but not for long--

They had to fire the last bartender and they also suspect he was stealing from them.

He would give away free drinks which I guess is a form of stealing, etc

How else do employees steal?

Millions of ways. We refrain from posting them here. We don't want to give anyone ideas.

If anyone does post them, we might have to delete them.

Very true. I can not count the ways and i try to uncover ways all of the time. People can become very creative when they want to!

And I would assume that a lot of employees that steal do not think they are stealing right?

Do you they have the attitude that things are owed to them?

that is correct.

Employees who steal always think they're entitled to do so, as if they're the only reason customers come and spend money, therefore they deserve more than their hourly rate and tips. In their mind they're not stealing. Of course they couldn't be more wrong and then I have to show them what entitlement really means by firing them.

they could be just a clepto or just a thief for habit or cuz they are crooks.

cameras go a long way in helping to prevent and curb stealing - well trained management helps even more.

i sent you some information and how to stop it in PM, hope that helps out. In the last place i ran as a manager, i busted quite a few employees. best way to handle this is do not be lenient. this is your money, and the customers money that they are stealing. an unsatisfied customer or unhappy customer= no customer, and if they keep stealing from you, in the end it will hurt, even if its pennies or drinks.

Estefon recommended http://www.restaurantowner.com/ (http://www.restaurantowner.com/) for my question regarding POS systems. They have alot of good information on theft.

bartend for a few nights and think of all the different ways yourself. It helped me.
