Hey guys, my name is Joe...im new here, but not new to the whole night club/dance/partying scene. I'm a 19 year old double business major at the University of North Dakota...and im VERY VERY business inclined, and hard working when the opportunity is right.

Anyways, im in a small college town (40k people...50k when school is in session), and there is absolutly nothing for us college kids to do...theres like 4 bars, but no dance floors. So ill be renting out a small venue, its about 1500-2k sq ft. I'll be having dances there starting on the 25th and each friday after. I already have my equipment and lighting, and ill be DJ'ing using my computer. The owner of the venue provides the alcohol, bartender, and security. All im responsible for is charging admission ($7) and checking ID's and handing out wrist bands to those who are over 21. I'm doin this with a buddy of mine, so him and another person will be workin the door...while im making things hot w/ my dj skills and lighting effects ( i understand all the psycological effects, i took a few psycology classes).

Anyways, i plan on having a different theme/event for each friday night, well enough to get them in a rotation. I am going to be orderin a foam machine and want to have a foam party one night, another night i want to have ladies night..and durin that same night i want to have a wet t shirt contest and a grindin contest, winning girl will get around $200, runner up $50. I was just wondering if anyone else had more ideas for this to keep this thing poppin each weekend.

as far as promoting, usually it just goes by word of mouth...but i plan on doin that (im very popular in this town...not to be conceited) and posting flyers all over campus (doorms, halls, bus stops, etc...). Also, on the entrance of the venue, im going to have a big board with announcments stating what events are coming up for the following dates...you know, i want to keep this going on a regular.

Eventually i'll have to upgrade to a larger venue because i project more people will keep comming...and my college has about 11k students and growing each semester. My current venue probably has enough room for 5oo people max, but i doubt ill get it maxed out its first night.

As for music goes, ill be playing main stream hip hop and a LITTLE pop. I'll have security enforced and any fighting will be prosecuted to the fullest extent, that'll also be noted on the bulletin board.

keep in mind, im a major business person...i was the first freshmen to get a business internship at UND and also took first place in state DECA and top 30% in the international event, so im not just a regular kid who thinks this will be a fun thing to do.

What i eventually want to do within the next 2-4 years is actually own a building for a night club up here, and expand to surrounding communities with population double of this town (more college towns), and zero night clubs.

I would just like to get EVERYONE's input, whether positive or negative, and any suggestions would be great. I appreciate everyone's help. thanks

ok... I can relate to where your coming from... I am a 23 year old college senior, and i am also a nightclub owner.. check out my club on

that is my club... here is a suggestion.... first, you say that you willl be the DJ? what is your experience? Let me tell you by my experience.. The DJ can make or break the club, it is not just playing music, and just putting in CDs or whatever will not work... If you honestly want this to work, get an experienced DJ who will cater to the college females...

and another thing, you can take all the business classes and have a PHD for business.. but that means nothing honestly... I have never taken a business class, or a marketing class, nothing like that...

the most important things that matters in my opinion is experience, and you gotta be motivated... because your gonna be put through some hard times, beleive me i know.. if you really do go through with your plans, then theres gonna be times where your just like "what have I done? i cant handle all of this" its normal man... Sometimes I work 16 hour days bro, I have no social life honestly.. But if you wanna survive in this industry, you gotta work harder than anyone else... especially in the beginning! you gotta be able to put your foot down, and guide people, get there respect and make them listen to you...

are you that type of person?

hmm...man, my DJ experience is zero. I mean, i planned on using my laptop and having a playlist on PCDJ software, and having the software mix the songs during transitions. I also planned on gettin involved w/ the crowd, u know by having those events like the wet tshirt contest and stuff, and eventually throwin t shirts and stuff into the crowd. I guess i'll start lookin around for reputable dj's. any other advice?

well besides getting an experienced DJ, I would make sure to get everything in writing w/ the club owner... make sure all the terms are set before you do any promoting, even little things, has got to be in writing... Its no disrespect to the owner, you just cant trust anybody bro.. Not even your best friends..

Going into business w/ your friends, is a very bad idea... I hired 2 of my closest friends as my managers, both have a lot of experience w/ clubs... 1 is working out great, but the other I am in the process of firing... It sucks, but do what is best for the business...

Go all the way through it, If you say your gonna start doing this, dont BS about it and not go all the way through it... Even if you start to get discouraged, go all the way through and try it out.. Because you will never know what might have been u know?

If you do start this, be patient... It might be a total disaster the first week, maybe even a few weeks, but if you really do know what your doing, take advice from the people that are experienced, then it should steadily grow.. It might take months before you actually start seeing good progress, then again, it might be an instant HIT! The key is to give it your all, and dont get discouraged...

one big thing is this!! DONT LET NEGATIVE PEOPLE TAKE YOU DOWN!!!!!!!! Believe me bro, I know by experience.... Do you know how many haters there are out there??? Im only 23 years old, and bro, believe me when I started telling people i was buying a club, they wouldnt believe me.. they were like yeah thats cool, good luck, but you could tell they thought I was full of it..

If you see a big opportunity and everybody else says that you shouldnt do it, thats what separates an entrepreneur from an everyday average citizen.. Its that we take chances, and we act on opportunity while others are saying that it will fail.. Dont be one of those people who afraid to take chances... And separate yourself from negative people, they are no good...

And if you have a dream, and you really work hard on it, you can accomplish it man... you can do whatever you wanna do that you set your mind on... Nothing is impossible, but to make BIG MONEY, you have to take that chance, and do what others are scared of doing...
