Greg,

You don't know how many times on this forum people have said 'I'm thinking of opening a nightclub...'

Check out all of the posts and threads from the past couple years. There's an unbelievable wealth of information contained in these pages. Everything from how much to pay a DJ, to details on atm machines. I have learned so much from reading this forum.

I don't own a club, but I'm in promotions and work with a lot of club owners and managers. I would recommend going to school for Business. Learn things like accounting and book keeping. You can learn a lot in school about managing money. Take some classes on advertising. Get some hands on with a graphic design class. Learn all of the 'book' elements of the business at school.

In the meantime (while you're at school), your second 'class' should be to work at a bar from the second you start school. Start off with whatever job they give you. Try being a barback. Work your way on to being a bartender. You'll get a real sense of how the bar works from the inside while learning about managing money from school. There are things you can learn while working at a bar that they won't teach you at school (i.e. how do you know if somebody is stealing from you?).

If you work at a bar for your four years of college, and then STILL want to open a bar, you'll have 4 years experience under your belt PLUS a degree in business. Your bar fantasy may never come true, but you can always fall back on your degree.

I can help you with this, Very competitive market out there specifically in the area or genre your planning to operate, my EX's 2 brothers had 2 latino/dance music style nightclubs out there and are both closed now, why? she said they were getting tired of all the headache that came along with running a club e.g. the fights, the drunks, someone got shot at in one of the clubs.
hope your aware of all that as well.
regards
rene.

I seriously think you would be much better off WORKING in a nightclub for a few years. Yes, I said years. Then once you see what works, what doesnt, what it's really like day in and day out behind the scenes, you can decide if you really want to run your own place.

A nightclub is not an easy business to run, and not something I would recommend as a first business venture.
