Since I know that there are a lot of club owners on the board, I figured I would ask you. I decided that I need more experience in the business. So far the extent of my experience has been in promotions and I want to either expand or digress a little to get a feel of the clubs workings. One of the most popular local night club is having interviews next week for almost all positions. I want to apply for either a position with promotions or door man. I am not really "big" enough to get involved in security and I have bartending experience. Now what should I do to set myself appart from the rest of the applicants? If you were the owner of this club, what would you be looking for? I just need some ideas on how to show that I am "the best man for the job." Also, can anyone recomend a good bartending school? Id there one that is looked at with more respect then another? Thanks

A few thoughts concerning service/promotions positions:
I want someone who is an extrovert, someone who has that
aura of "impossible to dislike." Always has that contagious
smile and upbeat attitude.
I don't want someone who answers every question with a nod
or shake of the head or a "mmmph."
I want someone that doesn't misrepresent their level of skill
and experience. Willingness and ability to learn are extremely
important, experience is secondary. Bartending ain't rocket
science. I've spent a lot of hours un-training what some folks
were taught in "Mixology Courses." We do it my way here,
I fully expect to teach you what my way is.
I don't want someone to tell me that they've bartended for
10 years, but can't tell me what's in a Manhattan. I don't want
to see that they've worked in 6 clubs in the last 2 years.
"Making the rounds" is a big red flag on the same order as two
people who come in expecting to be interviewed together
because "we're a team."
I want someone who shows enough interest in my business
and the positions available to ask me as many questions
as I'm asking them (but not to make me feel like I'm the one
getting interviewed, as my position is fairly secured, and my
personal life is none of their damned business.)
I don't want someone who tries to convince me that they are
as good as hired, and that I'm an ass if I don't hire them on
the spot and fork over an advance on pay before the interview
is over. Confidence is one thing, arrogance is another.
I want someone who presents themself as a professional,
and who will represent my club with a well-groomed
appearance and attention to politeness and grammar in
their speech.
I don't want someone who shows up looking like they just
rolled out of bed with a hangover and threw on the first
clothes they pulled from under the toilet. I don't want
someone who immediately feels like he's on a first name basis
with me unless and until I tell him so. I'm not hiring a buddy.
I don't want someone speaking to me in a language out of an
DMX song or tries to get overly familiar with their language and
manner. I don't want someone handling my money whose
application looks like it was filled out by an 8-year-old. Should it
stand to reason that you shouldn't go to an interview smelling
like booze, weed, or looking like a poster child for the crystal
meth foundation? It should, but it hasn't, on occasion.
I want someone who shows lots of energy and enthusiasm and
has a lot of stamina.
I don't want someone who looks like gravity and entropy are
their primary motivators.
I want someone who tells me about their schedule restrictions
(or lack thereof) up front, and tells me they're always available
for call-in's, and most importantly, I want them to offer that they
are the kind of person who takes their schedule very seriously
and not as a necessary evil that is followed when it suits their
personal life.
I will not pay someone to make my life more difficult. If
you can only work on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, except for
every other week when you can't work Tuesdays, and the
first week of every month when you can only work until 10:00
pm on Wednesdays, then you've talked me out of you. I don't
want to hire a ****tail waitress and then have her tell me not
to schedule her on Fridays and Saturdays because that's the
nights she "goes out." I get really irritated when I want to
offer someone a position and can't get through to them on
the phone number(s) they left me. If you're hard to get ahold
of now, it doesn't look good for later when I'll really need you.
I want to hear that they are most willing to be cross-trained, are
interested in every aspect of the business, and don't consider
any job in the business to be beneath them. Even if they are
primarily interested in a particular position, they understand
the nature of small business and are always ready to help
the owner/manager out in a pinch.
I don't want someone who tells me they are most interested in
the job because they're broke and their car got repo-ed, or
because they're saving up to get their sex-change operation
reversed.
