Hey guys!

Hope some of you experienced bar owners/workers could share your thoughts to me about a new venture I might get into.

I currently own a liquor store in a college town in Florida and was thinking of getting into the bar business. Now the strip that my liquor store is located in has 3 bars already. 1 is a night club, which is only open maybe 3 to 4 nights a week, and only after 9pm. 2 is a beer bar, they only serve beer, no liquor. 3 is a full bar/bistro. So why would I open another bar in the same plaza?

Well here are my thoughts....
All these bars mentioned, make there money on volume, they attract all the college students with $1.00 drafts or $2.00 pitchers and make their money that way. If I was to open a bar next to my liquor store it would not handle that type of volume, so I would have to make it up on the drinks itself. So, this bar will have to me more upclass, like a martini bar type place. Somewhere where people can come and have a drink and a conversation without yelling at the top of their lungs. Someplace quiet, relaxing, enjoyable. Don't know if this makes any sense at all. Ive spoke with many of my customers and they seem to like the idea because there isnt a bar like that around here. They either have to go to another county or downtown.

Alot of the college students Ive spoken with like the idea (especially the older ones). The younger students will still go the most bang for their buck, but the older students are tired of that scene and want someplace more down low.

The place I had in mind is only 1900 square feet, so it will be a very small bar. But thats what im shooting for, small, quiet, relaxing, etc...

Now, ive asked myself why my place would take off & what I have that the others don't, and this is what I came up with.

The nightclub is only open certain days, plus its a club, not a real bar, and there is always a cover to get in.

The beer bar only serves beer, While I will have a full bar.

The bar/bistro will have a drawback in july with the no smoking ban going into effect since they serve food. My place wont serve food to begin with, so I wont have to worry about that.

Also they biggest plus on my side is that I have a dual license, I won't need to purchase another liquor license which will save me tons of money....

Any thoughts? ideas? things to look out for? or should i just give the idea up? any input would be appreciated!!!!

Thanks!

del,

thanks for your reply. I can be different as far as appearance goes, but my problem would be if I have low prices as you suggested, I wouldnt be able to make it up in the volume because of the lack of room, thats why i need to make it more upscale and charge extra for the drinks. plus im hoping that this would attract the older crowd/residential people...
