We have always had decent results building a happy/hungry hour promotion around a 2 for one or buy one get one appetizer promotion. It also seems to really spur the beverage consumption for these hours. I know this isnt anything earth shattering, but hey, it works.

How do you market your happy hour promotion? We are a Night Club in Orange Co., California. And we are trying to establish a Happy Hour. We have tried a few different ideas, (free buffet, employee incentive programs, marketing the businesses around us) but we can't seem to compete with the local El Torito, or the National Sports Grill. Anyone else have any ideas?

Have you tried soliciting happy hour business from your local office, bank, and misc, buildings?
Setting up special "spotlight" parties for each office intially with a big comp party as a lure.
Banking on their return.

Hi,
My name is Art Tenoyan. I'm the Bar manager at Nikko Hotel Guam. We have a new bar that's one year old. Competition is heating up. Can someone help me spark up my sales with promotional events that will involve local customers.

Many Thanks,

Hi Art,
A night club in Guam huh. I have a hard time picturing that, but Guam has changed alot I know since I lived there as a child. What kind of Bar do you run? Whats the competion like? I assume you are cateing to the tourist trade which is made up of alot of Japanese trade. What's hot in the Japanese club scene? Most likely anything that mimics the West.If its mainly a local hang out the same should apply. This site has some great ideas, just look around.
Is the Brown snake problem really that big? When I was there (aloooong time ago)we only heard roomers of snakes way up in the boon docks, never ever saw one though.
Good luck, Guy

The promotion was "FLASHY UNDERWEAR CONTEST"
We gave out prizes for the flashiest, skimpiest,sexiest,frumpiest,....you get the picture.

Liz,

Run a promotion to have customers drop a business card in a fish bowl to win an office happy hour party. Call everyone back that puts a card in the fish bowl and tell them they are the winners of the office happy hour. This makes them think they won something special. Schedule maybe 2 or 3 office parties a night depending on how big the bar is. Tell them to bring 20 of their closest coworkers in during the happy hour and give them a free buffett and discounted alcohol prices. ALSO HAVE SOME FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT...Disc Jockey, Karaoke...etc. Reason #1- If your bar looks busy and people are dancing and having fun, people remember your place as being fun and as a happening place. Reason #2- It's very likely that some of these office party people will stay after happy hour is over if they are having fun. Therefore, they will be paying regular price for drinks.

Hello All,

I have a client who develop and distribute their own brand of alcoholic fruit beverage amongst other beverages. We have been able to run various promotions in bars - clubs that introduce the product to their clientele, and thus their patrons - are there any other type of promotional methods that create crowd participation and inter-action to introduce the product in the club and to induce sale on the evening. Don't forget...these are mega dance clubs and some smaller chain pubs...

Thanking you in advance....

Jim

Make your staff your stars.

Why is just a DJ well-known at a club?

Why not the waiter/ chef / bartender - your staff? Time to whip up a web site on this concept. Make one yourself. People could visit the Web site and ask drink recipe / food recipe advice from the staff. This approach makes you TOTALLY unique to any other place. Cos any other place DOESN'T have YOUR staff.

Could you circulate flyers with staff pics on them that showcase the staff in some way? Or create a web page WITH this flyer on it and ask your CUSTOMERS to print out and circulate them -- thus saving yourself paper and engaging your current customers in the acquistion of new clientele. (ie. showcase staff with strong community ties is one approach, Tom Cruise-like bartender drink creators, is another or even something silly or eyecatching like one waitress who can juggle limes? Relate the silliness to something club related)

Hire a dance instructor (if you have a dance floor) and have her/him create a 'Nikko Hotel Guam' dance step or series of dance steps. Promote the dance instructor / offer dance lessons.

The main point here: take a look at the people who work for you. What is it about THEM that makes your establishment unique?

Hallie,
I am in complete agreement that your staff is a promotional army. However, I have noticed that several of your suggestions in the last few days include the creation of a website. Hey, I'm all for it, however, what's your advice for those of us who don't know how to whip up a website, or how do you feel about the general lack of participation in the Net by the bar industry as a whole? I'm eager to read your response.

So here is my problem. I manage the bar of a major casual dining chain. Our restaurant does a volume of $100k per week with 25% being the liquor beer and wine mix. We have been very successful in experiencing growth in sales over the years. We have been at this location for 17 years(were one of the first) but now, the is a tremendous amount of new restaurants and bars that have opened. Our late nite bar business continues to be successful because of all of the new servers coming to drink after work. However, our happy hours and early evening hours have dropped tremendously. I realize that people like to to go out and try new things, but what would be some suggestions for rebuilding the sales that we are missing?

Thanks,
Bryan

Try a Tequila Shack Party. Talk to your Tequila brand supplier-organise sombreros and panchos for staff (and moustaches!) Have free nachos or something to eat. Maybe tequila shots on special or small promotional giveaways with each shot you sell (keyrings, hats, whatever) Get sexy Mexican-looking folk to sell Tequila from the shack. Have a shootout in your bar (fake of course!) Chili eating contest.

I've already come up with a thirsty thursdays open mic night with cheap drinks and food and that is really rockin right now, but we need something for tuesday nights. Right now I am thinking of a Dance night with cheap Blender drinks for the summer, and shooter specials. I want to know what kind of specials, giveaways would be good for this sort of night. any ideas on dance contests ect... is appreciated Thanks alot!!! Dan

I went to a bar recently that had a cool nightly contest, here it is............
Everytime you buy a drink at the bar you write your name on a ticket that goes into a drawing at midnight. At midnight they pick a name and the winner has a chance to win the progressive pot. To win they are presented with a deck of cards. If they draw the joker they win the pot. If they don't the card they drew is torn up and thrown away. The odds get better every day. The pot could go up as much or as little as your budget can afford, or you could simply have a "fixed" prize.

Lets be honest about it, your best to get into a pair of hotpants and a skimpy top, get among the guys and the shots will sell themselves. You could also do theme costumes with appropriate shots i.e. dress as a scientist and do them in testubes? Believe or not but if it is different it works almost for the novelty!

Paul here Manager Sports Bar in San Diego. One gimmick I had was Guest Bartender. What it is, is any one of your guests sign up to be G.B. during your slowest time of week. Be it monday happy hour, whatever. Anyway there behind the bar from 5 to 7, they invite all friends, and your G.B. makes the drinks. Now your bartender is there to supervise, (and make sure ALL the drinks are rang in.) your G.B. can keep tips, but usually have them donate to charity. This brings in new cliental, increases sales, and attracts A SHIT LOAD OF PUBLICITY (all free). I allow my G.B. to do themes and anything else that might suit them. It's gone over SO well that I now only do sign up sheets one month at a time. If you'd like to know more, just e-mail me and I'll let ya know, as well as any questions you may have.

Here's something that has worked VERY well for us. *Monthly Golf Tourney* We get discounted greens fees from local courses (because we bring 25-40 people), we get stuff from our distributors too. We offer a free buffet after the tournament, and we announce the winners AT THE BAR. We add $10-15 to the greens-fees and call it an "entry-fee". We then give it back as winnings at the bar. It's only once a month, but it will fill a small bar for hours!

I'm the marketing and promotions director at a bowling center in Wisconsin. Our bar has been very successful with the designing of bar menus that feature your bar's six favorite drinks, appetizers, beer selections. Also having your bartenders upsell by suggesting a call brand liquor instead of a rail/well liquor. Hmmm. What else. For the other bowling center person asking about their open play for families. We tried a Karaoke/Bowling Party. We had the Karaoke set-up on our concourse. We put different colored pins in and if a colored pin was the "head-pin" and they struck they got to come up and spin a wheel that had different prizes on it like a free drink, bowling bucks, mystery prize. This went over really well, families said they never had so much fun and wanted to know when we would be doing it again.
