Hey…. So I wonder if there is any credible club mogul in here??? I know it’s a forum and you can have a bunch of nobody’s that have no clue about night clubs and bars. I got over 13 years of experience. I am a second generation club owner. I have organized over 60 concerts both small and up to 10,000 people. I can make any dead club in the planet busy! Done it before and I got the master formula on making a club packed

Geez, a whole 13 years, wow! All of us feeble nobodys will just sit back and awe over you coming words of wisdom. Nice introduction to disrespect many long-term,contributing members that you really know nothing about, some with 2-3x your so called experience. I always say that no matter how much experience you have, the first moment you begin to think you know everything in this industry, is the first moment you become a bad manager with a closed mind. Anyone should be constantly learning and relearning, understanding different perspectives with an open mind. I've learned that some are good and have an expertise in one area while others have their forte in other areas. You need a complimentary team for a sucessfull venue and that success is dependent on many factors and many people.

Welcome my Bar Friend.
I have over 40 years of experience. Yes, I am old but I can still hold my beer with one hand without spilling it (most of the time).
Thanks for coming to the site. I'm not an expert at anything and if someone says that they are....well.....run! Ya know, there's a lot of shit to this shit!
I hope that you can help us. We have really grown and need all of the experience and different opinions that we can get.
I might need your advice on the Concert thing. I've just been asked to put a few together for a new client.

@Michael black didn’t mean to come out ****y or disrespectful but I am blunt and straight to the point.. I am relatively young for the position that I am right now. I am from Toronto Canada and if you are up to your facts we have the most dance floor space in the world. It’s very competitive and you have to be on top of your game or you will not survive in this town. I have learned a lot from my dad but also from all my experience working with other clubs. But I got to disagree with you on one point, this business is built on luck or having the real life experience. You cant go to school for this, experience and the right tools greatly increase your chances of success.
@David..40 years that’s amazing…you are rare in my city there is only a hand full of you guys. I look forward to our conversations. When it comes to concerts my most important tool I use is are the clients FANS OF THE MUSIC OR FANS OF THE ARTIST. Lots of artists have great music but there listeners are not fanatics. The way I test this is out is to see the reaction of the listeners when I mention the upcoming show. These points are good too 1. Venue has to reflect the artist and make him look bigger then he is. 2. three months of heavy promotion.. posters are the most effective an radio sux.3. The month is also very important. Stay away from dec, jan, july, august. Ticket price and your break even point are very important. I set my break even point to 1/3 of my expected attendance.
@ ministry yeh it did help out that my dad showed me the ropes. I consider a club mogul I guy that shapes his genre. He owns the top night clubs in the city for his genre and cant seem to do nothing wrong. Charles khabouth is a god in my city, there are others but he seems to have the right touch.

welcome to the boards...although that is a pretty arrogant intro.
This is not your typical forum...yes many are full of looky loos with no clue...but this forum is full of experienced owners and promoters
Many of us are consultants...each with different specialties....why not have an open mind, look around and see what you can see.
I have done over 100 concerts/events myself since 1990..from no names to top artists...and i still help others do shows...
if you truly have a formula that packs any club, i suggest you bottle it and sell it...as you will have a never ending supply of customers.

@ I am from Toronto Canada and if you are up to your facts we have the most dance floor space in the world.
how big is your dancefloor? we have some pretty big ones here in the USA.
the COUNTRY of canada has around 33 million people...we have about 10 times that many in the USA
GREATER Toronoto area has about 5.5 million people
here is our top 10 cities:
New York, NY 15.2
Los Angeles, CA 10.8
Chicago, IL 7.7
San Francisco, CA 5.9
Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX 4.8
Houston-Galveston, TX 4.5
Philadelphia, PA 4.4
Washington, DC 4.2
Atlanta, GA 4.0
Detroit, MI 3.9
they seem pretty close to you in size
My area -- the tampa bay area (2.3 MM)...is market number 19
in one part of town...Ybor City..there are maybe 40-50 clubs and bars within a 20 square block radius...on ONE STREET there are 20 clubs/bars right NEXT TO EACH OTHER...talk about "competition"
and when it comes to concerts RADIO IS KEY and some of our biggest concerts happen during the summer - May - Aug and Christmas/new years holiday Dec/Jan...and thats not just us, thats all overr the USA
We also have schools that teach business management, and hospitality business...that combined with the necessary training in house...you can learn a lot from schools...at least here you can.
i guess when so few people, are spread so far apart, its easier to be a big fish in a small pond...here, there are rarely "kings of the city who can do no wrong"...we have too many people...big fish in other places, end up finding out this is the big blue ocean and they are just another fish
Canada is MUCH different than the USA

Thanks teenclub for the welcome.. I can see that I am going to learn a more global and American perspective on nightlife. Any thoughts about your area… your do’s and don’ts
I apologize i was to trying to get back to everyone that I forgot to put in the dance floor space to population… We have an area that has about 40 clubs as wel..l
We gave birth to a new club district for the over 30 crowd. There is about another 8 clubs in that area. 3 mega night clubs, one for 6000 people and two night clubs for 3000 people.
Radio is a big media but with mp3 players, all the burning, portable converters to change channels etc the cost in my opinion out way the benefits. If I had to but money in any advertising I would always bank on print. The radio I would use just for hype but a very small campaign in the first phase of promotion. BIG FISH SWIM IN THE SUMMER.. That’s why I stay away from the summer! One thing I will give it up to the united states is Miami New York , Vegas for breading the clubs of today. I have been studying a lot of clubs in Europe lately. I have you heard of the club franchise cache?

Mr. Promoter-
I am very familiar with the Toronto market and I just got back from there a few weeks ago. See my posts on lighting responding to Ruben at clublifetoronto.com We agree that it is a very competitive market and one that should be looked at by anyone learning, relearning, or staying on top of the nightclub market. I am not sure what you were diasagreeing with, but I agree with teen that there is alot that can be learned by hospitality schools and college management & marketing classes with regards to operations and general marketing. However, I also agree with you that many of the ins and outs and especially promotions has to be learned in the trenches. The best imo, have a good traditional education combined with street smarts and experience. I tend to also side with print over radio but once again, it depends on the event. I certainly agree with teen that radio is key for top concerts and music acts.Marketing and advertising timing is also dependent on the event, market, etc.. There is no one magic formula for all places all the time. My only problem with Toronto is like alot of cities in the US, there is too much monkey see monkey do and they all start appearing to be the same old thing. I am curious as to the new club district catering to an older crowd you are refering to in Toronto - where is it and what clubs are there? I was probably there but didn't realize it was a district for a little older crowd. Also what clubs does Charles Khabouth operate? Is he the one behind Guvernment? Ever hear of Peter Gatien?
