As we all know the liquor of the moment is rum. All sorts of rum, light, dark, dark select, anello, spiced, falvored, you name it.
In NYC the Caribbean craze began two years ago. I first started drinking Mojitos in the late 90s when there were only a handfull of establishments that even had a clue how to make one. Most of those were Cuban restaurants and underground lounges. Now the drink is staple on any decent cocktail bar menu. It is outpacing the Cosmo as the most popular cocktail, among female and male drinkers evenly.
Neck and Neck with the Mojito is the Brazilian Capairinia, Cacha cane liquor, limes, sugar, soda water. The Dark and Stormy is following closely . Bermuda's national drink, Dark rum and Ginger beer with a twist is potent.
Now Polynesia is rearing its' head.
In the last month, two Tiki bars have opened (one along Brooklyn's Smith Street restaurant row) and the other in the hipster East Village. They are selling out on Mai Tais, Zombies, Beachcombers, and all sorts of Rum based drinks!
I do not know what the rest of the country is up to, but get ahead of the game and start educating your covers that rum is good for more than just a rum and coke. I believe next month's GQ will also have an article on the subject.
Salute.
