Hi Guys,
I am in the process of opening a new neighborhood bar and we are having a real hard time coming up with a catchy name that we really love.
A little about the bar:
Its a neighborhood bar located in a downtown area of suburb city of Boston.
Address is 120 Foster St
Not Irish theme
Not Sports theme (although there will be plasmas and games on just not sports memorabilia everywhere)
Going to be comfortable, fun, inviting atmosphere
Light food menu also will be available but its not really like a bar & grill.
Younger to middle aged crowd 21-30
Music/DJ on weekends
Its a medium sized bar seating for about 75, about 1600 Square feet
We really want something simple, easy to say, with no negative connotations.
We like names like The Last Drop, Pour House, Whiskey's, Good Times, etc but unfortunately these all already exist in the Boston area.
Thanks for any ideas you have!
-Dave

Hi Hollywood and thanks for the reply! I do have another partner and we were looking for something that doesn't have one of our names in it.

When we went to name our bar, we created teh website, www.NameTheBar.com as a promotional idea. We were opening a new Country & Western Nightclub in Augusta, GA and started this web site so our future patrons could assist in naming the bar. We teamed up with local radio stations for out target market and began an e-mailing campaign, sending out an e-mail with the web site to our friends and family and asking them to pass it on, getting some local press for the inventive idea, free promos from the radio stations as well as paid adds split with other businesses, etc. to get the word out 2 months before we open. When they went to the site, we receive their e-mail addresses for future marketing ideas, their opinions and suggestions before we even opened, etc. as well as a section for employment where some filled out an application or contacted us.
This promotion could work with various web names, even if you already have a name for your bar / restaurant / club. For example www.NewBarAugusta.com or www.YourOpinionIsNeeded.com, etc. Spread the word via e-mail and also with business cards with nothing but the web site address for people to view. Let them see pics of the work in progress, apply for a job and find out what media outlets they currently use so you can hit your target market with proper advertising from the begining. After you have several names given to you, have a final one week promo with 5 of your favorites listed and have everyone vote on those 5 or so. This will also work well if you have a weekly newspaper in your area that is geared towards the hospitality industry.
Then, when you open, have a pre-opening party and invite everyone who provided you with names, completed your survey, answered questions, gave menu ideas, etc. Now, you will have an immediate regular base of customers that will tell others they helped to name the bar and they have know the owner, etc. -- no better free marketing.
Good Luck.

call it "I don't know"....Where do you want to go tonight "I don't know"
or "He's/She's/I'm not INN"
"Har Bar"(Harbor)
"Bar Knuckles" (barnacles)
There is a Stumble INN in central Illinois that I know of...
"Drunk INN" Drunken
if you wanted to go for a dirty joke could call it "Pub or Tea?"(Puberty)
I read a post about a bar named "Taki Tiki"(Tacky Tiki) in Seatle.
Since you are in Boston with Celtics Legend Larry Bird.... you could call it "Hoosier Daddy" and decorate it with sports memorabilia centered around him and Boston Sports.
All that said some of my ideas are dumb I know but im drunk and don't really care to change them now lol.
Think of something you can do promos with.... take Chris L.'s (excellentbars)
DIRTY. Tons of wordplay with his advertising.... GENIUS!

Every city, township, county, locality needs a "Main Street Pub" ;)
Here are a few ideas:
Flows - rolls off the tongue
The Red Barrel - not sure where that came from
Goonies - love that movie
The Swig
Tasty Place

It must be a difficult choice naming something that is going to become so important
Sadly I'm more of an ideas man for nightclub names rather than bars

Well Dave,
First off ya change your name to Bob, put on about 50 pounds, cop a serious attitude....And....you are now....
" BAD BOB'S BIG BUTT BAR of BOSTON"
or ya skip the attitude thing (cuzz that will come soon enough) and just be
"BOSTON BOBS BIG BUTT BAR"
or...or you could get a snip and a tuck, some implants and walla... you're now
BIG BAD BITCH BRENDA'S BOSTONIAN BAR
hire yourself some kinky girls......and...now you're
BIG BAD BRENDA'S BAR and BOSTONIAN STYLE BROTHEL
(featuring Paula the Professional Prolific Pretzel Puller )
Ya know this just may have some merit !!!
As you can probably tell there is not a lot going on in Nebraska in August.
( well until the 30th anyway....GO BIG RED )
Well now you have my 3/4 of a cent worth, have a GREAT week,
Rick

Dave,
I gave ya some of my best material, so to keep to the old standard.
REMEMBER.....K.I.S.S.
How about something nice simple to the point and the fact that everyone wants to have their name on something...like a bar.
How about ...."Dave's Place" or just plain ol' "Dave's"
or hang a little boat out front and call it "Dingy Dave's" or "Dave's Dingy Dive"
or put a scuba diver in the boat and go with "Divin' Dave's Dingy"..
OR MAYBE SOMETHING ELSE ALLTOGETHER
See ya, good luck
Rick

Cheers or Boston Blackies?
Seriously, how about...
Globe
The Globe
Globe Tap
Globe Bar
Globe Tavern etc.
The Boston Globe is the most popular newspaper so they already have the simple name in their heads every day already. Branding by association. The logo is easy because, da, it's a globe and there are many variations. There is much marketing you can do from featured beers and liquor ( have a drinking club where they try different ones around the world), to free trip promotions, to different countries food and holidays, etc.. People love to travel and escape and you can have customers exchange books, photos in the bar and on your website, travel agency tie ins, etc..Good way to unite and build on the community. You can create an environment of everyone being welcome like Cheers but a little different. Of course green and saving the planet are increasingly big issues nowadays. Decor would be easy too without making it just a sports bar. A no brainer.

HEY DAVE,
How about you sit down by the phone and just start answering it with every name you can think of, what ever sounds best to you or rolls off the tongue the best or easiest thats the one ya go with.
Whatever you choose has to be quick and easy to say especially when your busy. Just for instance, "Little Ricky's Saloon and Good Time Empourium" does not roll very well, it works good on the sign and it confuses a lot of people, but when your busy and have to answer the phone it really doesn't work. Then I changed it to "Little Ricky's Saloon & Grill". Still a little long so it gets shortened to "Little Ricky's" or just "Ricky's" and it works.
So, just grab a phone and start practicing. WARNING: You might look like a dork when your doing it so make sure no one else is around when you do it.
Remeber K.I.S.S.
Later, good luck Rick
i think more info on your concept and ideas would give people a better chance at picking a name that fits.
Def agree to kep it simple. Think branding, marketability and merchandise friendly.
How about Harvard Yard, might be cool.

When you consider a name for your bar...why not take an honest look at the bar. What it offers. What the overall colors and interior/exterior design of the place. The main market of your club. What is the overall ambience and attitude of the bar.
Then you sit down and write down the names you don't like as bar names. Write down names and concepts that you like in bars. And then from the information you've gathered...you come up with some names. Even the names you don't like...try and make up some variations that you do like. Make a game out of the whole process.
Make sure your name fits the overall look of your bar and its services it provides.

How bout "First Call's" instead of "Last Call?"
Ok I don't know where that came from. But how many bars can you think of "WITHOUT" the last letter "S" on the end of it? Not too many. There's definately a reason. Makes it easy to say and more importantly, remember. But sometimes you get lucky and wind up with both with neither. Make sense? I didn't think so either. Hmmmmm.

Alright Dave,
My final submission, this is it, this is the wiener, the crem da la crem, or whatever... Ready for this...."Tinkles"....don't ask,,,, it just works, it rolls nicely and people will ask you WTF..it stems conversatio..you come up with a reason..or just tell them some dork from Nebraska told you to use the name....and just so you know this wasn't off the cuff, I really did put a lot of thought and energy into this one...it may sound a little on the gay side, but they'll get over it..
See ya,
Rick

It's located in Boston, why not call it "The Bahh"......since that's what everyone else would do anyways. ;) :D

I like that, "The Bahh" that's pretty good. Or, you could keep it super simple and just call it "The Drink". Your catch line could be...."Fall into the Drink".

i am going to guess that "the bahh" is slang for bar and not a bar for sheep ? i think that "the drink " is better because "the bahh" might be to general as a name.ie... we are all meeting at the bahh. where ? at the bahh. which bar ? the bahh. where ?
see what i mean ?

I can see it all now... all these cowboys would be walking in with their pants tucked inside their boots, just a lookin' for the woolies. "Where's the stump???"
"But honey...there's never going to be another ewe"
The cute little ewe comes staggering out of the barn all dazed and confuzed and tattered with that special little look in her pretty blue eyes, saying...."I'll never do that again for twenty bucks"
Dave.....You still don't have a name?????? what the hell???
Ok,, this is maybe my last idea...Have a buddy blindfold you, take you to the market, walk around for a while, when you say stop...whatever is at your right (or left) hand is what you call the place..ie.) Peppers or clorox..no never mind that one..Pop Tarts..I know it sounds a little gay but it might work. Or Midol...nah or Rump Roast...nope the gay thing again..well you get the drift... or just hang a damn blank sign out front and let them fill in the blanks.
Good luck,
Rick

I have often found, that if opening a bar in a small area...if that person (owner) is well known to the locals..(in a good way) ...that simply naming the place after you...example...say your name is Timothy Halbrooke...then T-Hall's...ect ect...just a thought
