This forum has been really great in planning a bar endeavor, I found really helpful information. But now i think I may have found a couple partners and we may try and do a restaurant. I know they are apples and oranges, I've worked in the restaurant industry and im also try to read as much material as possible on the subject, but i was wondering if anyone knows of a forum like this that might pertain more to the creation and operation of a restaurant.
Thanks!
As far as I know there is not this type of free resource for restaurant owners. There is however a paid site that is quite good. Made more for existing operator questions than start up questions. You can find it at http://www.restaurantowner.com
I can't post this entry without a warning. NEITHER of these businesses are one that you jump into without having worked in, learned and supervised nearly every position in an establishment. And not to suggest that a bar is easy, but compared to a full scale restaurant and the concerns of the everyday in that industry and the critical review of your product a bar is significant easier.

I own a bar and grill that does about 60% bar and 35% food. Restaurantowner.com is THE best site I have ever been a member of. I've never mentioned it here because I thought it would be bad form, but since the admin did.... :)
It's $99 to join, plus $12.95 per month for their monthly magazine. You will get your moneys worth in 5 clicks. No spammers, no promoters, plenty of downloadable documents and templates, videos and telephone seminars at no additional charge. And the guys that contribute on the forum (out of 50,000 + members) are fantasitcally smart. I rarely chime in there because I feel so small.
The layout on this NC&B forum is better though and much more democratic.
Even though their format is outdate, its so simple an effective that why change. Honestly, I suppose that's how we felt about this board too, until we got a little kick in the pants. But, I agree, totally worth the money, but again, do you agree that it's not really a startup site.

I think it's primarily a startup site. That's Jim Laube's and Joe Jerickson's purpose. I dont' agree with all the articles, but who does? The plethora of information on RO.com is enormous! The forum, however, leans towards current operators. Again, I do not like the layout of their forum at all... but everything else their is an absolute gold mine of information.
Something this forum could learn from and one I'd be willing to pay for.

oh sure, the docs are absolutely for newbies, sorry, I meant the forum. sorry.

I am new to both forums and like the style and mix of both. I will hit RestaurantOwner. com for a day or two read the forum and a seminar. Then jump over to here and check the latest post. I find I learn a lot from both like the true time and real life exchange.:D
