View Full Version : Smokin' Martini
I am looking for something similar to dry ice, but it has to be edible. We would like to put this right into the martini's so they have a smoking effect when we bring them out. If anyone has information on a product like this, please reply.
Thanks!

The only thing you can use to get this effect without poisioning people is 'dry ice' - Remember than dry ice is meerly frozen carbon dioxide, so it isn't poisionous, it just burns you because it's so cold.
If you could find a way to either keep a small amount at the bottom of the vessel, so that it couldn't be consumed as a solid, then you'd be in business... So long as your local government thinks it's safe, of course
Is it really that special to get a drink with water vapour over it though? Everyone's had a cup of hot coffee at some point in their life.
How about make your drinks special by deducting the wasted money that would be spent on the smoking drink idea from the price of your drinks ;)

The first time they breathed in a whiff of the CO2 gas they'd
be hacking all over your bar. Ever breathed in the gas that
comes out of a can or bottle of soda when you first open it?
There are fog effect that don't use CO2 - but none that I know
that are applicable to a beverage.

Hey guys, I gotta say I really love the idea of the 'Smokin Martini'!
The VooDoo Lounge at the Rio Casino (Las Vegas) use dry ice in one of they're signature ****tails called the 'Witch Doctor'. The effect is very impressive. The ****tail is served in a massive martini glass (must be at least 40oz), so I'd say the volume of liquid to dry ice ratio is important. The drink itself is a vibrant electric blue color.... yeah, yeah, it's kinda tacky but matches the theme of the bar. I first noticed two girls order a Witch Dr. to share and within half an hour most of the crowd was drinking them! It was an instant conversation starter.
I really believe this would work well done as a class/sexy looking martini. Not sure how long the novelty would last with a locals only bar though.
Cheers. Trin.

This takes up ALOT of room in a freezer but works with dry ice MOST of the time...take your martini glass and put a VERY small amount of water in the bottom of the glass (just moisten) place a piece of dry ice (size is relative to amount of liquid that you will put in there) and put the glasses in the freezer. These do NOT stay forever as dry ice will still disapate (sp) in the freezer eventually. When you take the frozen martini glass out of the freezer the dry ice is frozen to the bottom of the glass....you can then mix the martini in a shaker and pour into the glass. MOST of the time the dry ice will stay at the bottom...again not sure why this works MOST of the time but it does....at least that way you dont have your customer accidentaly consuming the chunk of dry ice. Hope this helps you.

I thought about this over the weekend. I found a couple of those really small plastic two-piece easter eggs. I drilled four small holes in each end of the egg. I placed a small chunk of dry ice in one side of the egg and attached the other side to it. I placed it in a glass of water and it worked.
Just an idea and it's a little safer than just dropping a chunk of dry ice in the drink.-

OK, this may seem like a shameless plug, but it is actually just another idea to make a Martini unique. How about a Glowtini - This is a martini with a blue glow cube in it. No messy dry ice, no worries about the unknowns of drunk people and dry ice. Disney does it, and blue glow cubes are not expensive through most companies like mine... Shop around!
Here is a link I found to site with a picture of one:

This truly is an impressive Martini!
