Im a maintenance mechanic and a guitar player in a band. Ive been tossing around the idea of opening my own place. I have no business experience. Ive been looking through here, reading posts. Theres an area near here that is expanding like a newlyweds penis, lol, and theres no live entertainment, just corner bars. I have good connections with very talented bands and dj's, but i dont know if i have the knowledge to see this thru. I guess my question is what can i do to to learn what i need to know to open a successful nightclub?? Im starting from less than scratch, but i have a dream. Any advice is more than welcome. Thanx for your time!!!

working in a bar gives you in-valuable experience, that is the first place to start. Another option is just to throw all your money at it and hope it works. You choose.

If your serious about openning a business, Cheek is right, you need experience of some sort. You need to understand how to manage money (not necessarily a degree, although it would be nice), sometime of bookkeeping skill. It is your money after all. Don't put all the marbles in your accountants hands. And hire staff that have strenghts at your weaknesses. Most importantly though is your attitude. Once you decide to do it, it's all attitude. You had better be prepared to work long and hard and you need to be driven. Oh, and enjoy your work!
Good luck!

if you see yourself as an aplha male then round up the DJ's and propose a party. You drive. Hire an underpatronized venue that is permitted to serve alcohol and get solid Security and consult your local police on what not to do and seek the advice from your local licencing bureau about district limits.
Generously cut the DJ's in so they are encouraged to spread the word. If it's an earner and you build a loyal following then yer on yer way.
Add a few doses of hype and advertising. Advertising means engaging another influential business ally Make money on the sale of alcohol plus ticket and booking fee.
in other words, throw a party and be smart about it. if that works throw another. make sure everyone benefits from your party. make friends with some paramedics and VIP them to your gig.
Tell the cops. be transparent. protect beyond the call of duty.
In other words, throw a big, safe, profitable, exciting PARTY! PARTY! YOUR PARTY but forget about your ego as you become one of the workers.
Doppelganger has some great suggestions. Listen to him. Aside from gaining your own experience and looking inward for your own personal fortitude, I would offer this: Find an experienced partner. If your area is such a gold mine, you should have no problem selling it to an experienced club owner from another city. Don't worry about him stealing your idea. He's busy enough with his own successes. But a successful entrepeneur is looking for a way to expand without getting too involved. If you can sell yourself, you may be able to arrange a mentoring relationship with your new friend. He will teach you the things that you would otherwise be missing.
