Analyze this one... rival bar and gimmicks...

I still consider myself a 'newbie' here, but to me anyway, this seems like a mistake on the part of a rival bar of mine, but wondering if they may be onto something I'm not???

Anyway, I took over a trashy but very profitable town/skank/college bar/club. I've been working my ass off to make the place better, slowly, bit by bit. Patio added, new paint, new artwork, new pool tables, new DJ equip, new lighting, all over about 2 years, more to come I'm sure, just giving you a brief rundown... still a lot of work to go. Anyway, I've been fighting this 'trashy' rep since I took over. Not quite ready to turn the corner, but w/in another year or 2 I think I will be.

There is 1 other bar in town that I would consider competition for my clientel, that being a 'dance club'. They are not as trashy (rep wise anyway) and from what I gather amongst my distributors, they do comparable business... probably a little better actually. Now, it's been brought to my attention they put stripper poles on their dance floor. This is something I've contemplated in the past, but I feel it would add to our 'trashy' image (despite the fact I have no problem doing wet t-shirt contests, lol). I have support beams that run down the middle, 2 are very near/on the dance floor. Often people WILL use them as 'stripper poles' for that style dancing, but they're not true 'poles' as more just beams. I think this 'cleaner' bar is making a big mistake by intentionally going after a trashier atmosphere. Maybe they don't see it that way? Maybe they keep the 'clean' clientel and they just get a little more risque/have a little more fun. I guess I'm wondering if this is a fad (the poles) or if I need to do this to compete, etc, etc... in all reality my personal opinion is they're making a mistake. What's your views?

Don't worry about the other bars......

It's your bar and you decide what type of promotional events that you are going to conduct and just make them LARGER THAN LIFE and get the word out and people will respond. Stripper Poles are everywhere now and it Could not hurt to add a couple..It's all about the presentation

if you dont have a problem with wet t shirt contest and they are a big hit with the patrons then I think stripper pole would be right up your alley, something your customers would enjoy. They are popular right now however I dont know if I would put one in right afte the competition. How about a dance cage or raised dance area.

Icky yes but the youngsters love it

Dance cage would be super sweet, as would a raised dance area (though not quite as sweet

BUT.... I have a drop ceiling everywhere but my tiny dance floor area A dance cage would look waaaaaaaay out of place trying to squeeze it into the actual dance floor area... now if I could raise the drop ceiling and put one just off the dance floor....

    Cool trashy

what's wrong with being a trashy dive bar ? if your busy and clean and have a good crowd what does it matter ? some people don't like all the glitz and glam of polished clubs and just wanna sit and have a beer. both my places are kind of "white trashy" and we get everyone in and they have FUN ! PEOPLE GO OUT TO HAVE FUN ! stop worrying about other people and put in that pole (ya i have atleast 2 poles in each place)

I was also thinking of putting in a pole and my husband says it sounds like a strip club! I agree with all of you. Fun is fun.

Most nightclubs have stripper poles now...

Most nightclubs have stripper poles now and it would be to your benefit to have them IF you are trying to compete with your other bars, take it one step further ---take one of your slower nights and put together a stripper pole contest and offer a nice cash prize.. Just do not tell JEN about it ---LOL
Just giving you a hard time Jen !

Skip the stripper poles. Just put in a couple properly placed fence posts. People will still have fun.

if you're looking for a removable stripper pole try this website platinumstages.com i have one of these poles in my house and when we have parties, the girls just love them. Lol we even take it to the beach house since it's really easy to take down, however be careful if you have a 200lb. Girl on the pole it might not quite hold that much weight. I think the max is like 180lbs in order for it to be safe. However platinumstages has little stages with a pole that are totally removable and i think they hold more weight...however if you really want to put this in your venue i suggest you go with a stationary pole. Hope my reply helped.

The funny thing is that having a pole in the bar, does not make it a trashy bar. We have one, and it is awesome to see how many girls let loose and go swing on it. AND the funnier thing is the guys who end up climbing the pole as well. It is hilarious!!!

Isnt the point of going out to have a good time? Letting loose and enjoying yourself? So made girls who are total angels in the light of day end up spinning on the pole. It doesn't make them skanky or trampy, they are just having fun.

Who needs a pole, the right music and we have them up dancing on the bar. Besides the fact that they are grinding it out on the dance floor. Now thats late just before closing, around 2:30am.

I already have enough guys coming in. I refuse to do any contests or promotion that will attract more of them. After a few years in the business I have learned not to do anything that will offend women at all. If you try to focus on bringing the women in and achieving that goal the guys will follow.

I would put them in and then find a local company (or a stripper) that teaches "pole dancing". Set them up to have a classes on a slow night each week, or once a month - then promote the hell out of it!

I just built a backbar out of steel with a concrete top ( so people can dance on it). I think that I'll place a pole in the center of it and see what happens.

    Not a problem

I can't see anything wrong with their idea of using poles on the dance floor, many girls love the idea of imitating a pole dancer and given the opportunity to twirl around the pole will jump at it.

In the lapdance club I ran in the UK one of the biggest problem security had was keeping people off the poles - they just see it as fun.

Of course, if they are putting the poles in with the intention of introducing strippers then its a different ball game, but, if it is just for customers to play firemen well, there's nothing wrong with it and they are adding a bit more 'entertainment' to their venue
Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, thats why several of us died of tuberculosis
